This is a picture of Q and her nurse, Gaby. As with any of our stays at our beloved children’s hospital, we always note the exemplary care we get from extraordinary healthcare professionals. Pictured (with permission) here is Gaby explaining something to Q and the looks on both of their faces just got me right into the heart. So much fear and compassion and caring and peace going back and forth from them.
ALL of the nurses were amazing, as well as the techs. There was so much continuity across the board. Nurses, techs, her respiratory therapists (treatment sometimes six times a day). Typical in healthcare, they have weekly three-day, 12-hour shifts and not always three days in a row. We did with Gaby and another one of her nurses Alesha (both so extraordinary I can’t even tell you) and with Gaby, she picked up a shift for day four, which was our going home day. It was a very hard stay but they made it better, bearable, and in the end, there were very bright spots because of the care she/we received.
We have a few new disciplines to add to Q’s care team. Pulmonary, infectious disease (I guess the type of infection can live in your heart valves or joints?), dermatology at the hospital, and we’re back in discussions with her surgeon about her bile diversion because of her skin issues with the adhesive.
Q was scary sick. She’d been to the ER Thursday before Sunday’s admittance and had a clear x-ray and under three days later it was severe bilateral pneumonia and sepsis. To everyone who sent prayers and good wishes, gift cards for food, delivered food to us and to those that sent SmileGrams and presents to Q… thank you so much.
We are home. We are grateful.
