It was Wednesday night when I started this and now it’s Thursday AM, right? Time is different on the inside.
Of course, we’d confirmed pneumonia Sunday night before we arrived and since then, they’ve confirmed a blood infection was present. It’s always scary for anyone to be septic but more so for immunosuppressed people, like Q. She really isn’t doing much better, generally speaking. Her voice sounds better, she still feels sick, her chest still hurts, her coughing is loud and painful and her kidney labs still aren’t great. On top of all of that, her skin is still broken down under the adhesives for her bileostomy (I’m working on a maybe helpful solution, we shall see).
All of this is to say, we hope the blood infection can be fought with the current 24/7 triple IV antibiotic cocktail and along with that make her more comfortable with the breathing treatments several times a day as well as pain meds and oxygen while she sleeps. We’re waiting on the blood cultures from Kaiser and CHOA drew labs for one today (that’s 24+ wait for results). Her transplant doc for forever has said it’s going to be a long recovery, potentially several days here and hopefully, in a few more days she will turn the corner and feel it for herself.
Q is hanging in there. She’s being a trooper, even while being bored and pissed and scared. There’s a lot to say about hospital life.
The images are the familiar and #amazingQ holding her favorite drink brought by friend Blaise and a rare moment of sitting upright, part of the ever-present coming or going CHOA helicopter taking off outside of our window, and my current view while answering emails. Pics posted with permission.
